SHUT UP & SING travels with the Dixie Chicks
(released 4/19/2007)

AFI's 6th Annual Music Documentary Series presents
SHUT UP AND SING - April 25th at the Arclight
Directors: Barbara Kopple, Cecilia Peck
Cast: The Dixie Chicks

SHUT UP & SING travels with the Dixie Chicks, from the peak of their popularity as the national anthem-singing darlings of country music and top-selling female recording artists of all time, through the now infamous anti-Bush comment made by the group’s lead singer Natalie Maines in 2003. The film follows the lives and careers of the Dixie Chicks over a period of three years during which they were under political attack, receiving death threats while they continued to live their lives, have children, and, of course, make music. At a time when the United States is allegedly fighting for democracy and freedom in another country, this film raises questions about our right as Americans to freedom of speech and its possible negative consequences. SHUT UP & SING is directed by two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Barbara Kopple (HARLAN COUNTY USA, AMERICAN DREAM) and Cecilia Peck. POST-SCREENING Q&A WITH DIRECTORS BARBARA KOPPLE AND CECILIA PECK, FOLLOWED BY A HOSTED RECEPTION.
